Sasan Gir is located at about 60 km from Junagarh and 157 km from Rajkot in Gujarat. It is the home of one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in India. Gir Wildlife Sanctuary is one and the only existing habitat of the Asiatic lion whose statistical figures are around 300 presently.
Other important wildlife in the sanctuary includes leopard, hyena, jungle cat, chital, sambar, nilgai (blue bull), four-horned antelope, wild ass, long-tailed langurs and wild boar among many others. The park also has a variety of birds that include the crested serpent eagles, white-eyed buzzard, hawk eagles and sparrow hawks. A crocodile farm has also been developed in Gir, which is one of the few remaining forests that comprise divergent habitat. The Sasan Gir National Park is definitely an ideal place for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers.
The Sasan Gir Wildlife Sanctuary also houses some antique temples like Kankai Mata and Tulsishyam. The best way to explore the sanctuary and enjoy the wildlife viewing in the Sasan Gir wildlife sanctuary is by a jeep safari.
The Sanctuary is open to visitors from Mid-October to Mid-June, while during monsoon months the Sanctuary remains closed and permissions from forest department is required to visit the sanctuary during this period.
