Ranthambore Fort: The fortress
of Ranthambhore, founded in 994 AD by the Chauhan Rajputs. This
imposing fort is perched atop a hill at an altitude of over
200 metres admist dense forest. After the defeat of Prithviraj
III, the Chauhan king, by Muhammad of Ghor in 1192, Ranthambhore,
led by Govinda Raja, grandson of Prithviraj, became the center
of Chauhan resistance to the expanding Sultanate of Delhi. Govinda
Raja was succeeded by his son Balhana.
Ranthambhor
National Park: This wildlife reserve figures amongst
the notable national parks in India. Tiger and other wildlife
viewing opportunities are in abundance here. Ranthambhore National
Park is a favorite for the tourists with special interest in
wildlife because of its extensive flora and fauna.
The sprawling dry deciduous forest of Dhok in Ranthambhore is
well known for tigers and an encounter with this predator is
not rare here. Sambar, cheetal, nilgai, wild boar, chinkara
and langur are prominent prey species of tiger. Also, the peafowl
forms a major menu item of this big cat.
