Ellora
is situated about 20km from Aurangabad. Numbering about 34 caves,
carved out in a curve on the slopes of a basaltic hill, they
represent three faiths of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The
finest examples of cave-temple architecture they were carved
during the period ranging from 5th and 8th century AD.
Among Hindu Temples, Kailasa temple, which is dedicated to Lord
Shiva, is the most glorious peace of architecture here. Placed
on a single high podium that was carved in a continuous frieze
of lions and elephants, it appears like they are carrying the
massive structure effortlessly on their backs. The Kailasa temple
is a must see for tourists visiting Ellora.
Other not to be missed architecture here is the magnificent
double-storied Visvakarma beautifully decorated with flying
figures with a seated Buddha in the stupa.
Among the Jain caves, cave 32 would attract your attentions
more with a yakshi seated on her lion under a mango tree laden
with fruits. The magnificent ceiling of the shrine with beautiful
lotus carved on it gives you a feeling of richness of ancient
Indian architecture.
