Aurangabad
is located in central Maharashtra at a distance of about 390
km from Mumbai and 400 km from Pune. The city derives its name
from the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb who made this city his viceregal
capital during his long 25 years stay in the Deccan. The old
charm mixed with contemporary touch makes Aurangabad a tourist
destination worth visiting.
The prime tourist attractions here are
Ellora Caves: A World
Heritage site, it houses about 34 cave temples dedicated Hinduism,
Buddhism and Jainism.
Shivaji Museum: It houses
weapons and antiques of the great Maratha Empire.
Bibi Ka Maqbara: A replica
of Taj Mahal popular as poor man's Taj Mahal.
Daulatabad Fort: Located
midway between Aurangabad and Ellora at about13 km this historic
fort was the brainchild of the 'mad' Sultan of Delhi, Mohammed
Bin Tughlaq who had decided to shift his capital from Delhi
to Daulatabad about 1100 km away. Surrounded by a 5 km long
wall, the sturdy fort has magnificent doorways, a 6-m cannon
and a victory tower Chand Minar.
Khuldabad: famous as the
